original bureau, $14.99, Goodwill

stencil, Michael’s, $10.99

Get it?  It’s cool cause it rhymes…

Anyway.

I have history of buying fixer uppers at Goodwill….and not fixer uppering them…

cough, cough

but times have changed.

And I have fixed up.

The above bureau to be exact.

Whatcha think?

I like it quite a bit.

I started with the white paint.

And then was at Michael’s getting supplies to make something for my new niece Summer Jane, and saw the stencil I used above and knew I had to get it.

The example the stencil packaging had on it was of a bureau just like mine, same exact doors and everything, so I can’t take too much credit for seeing the stencil and thinking of my bureau.

It was pretty much laid out for me by Martha.

Martha Stewart.

I then tossed the idea up of either doing one in the center of each panel door, or two on each, like I have above, kinda.

I went with doing two, and then decided that was ‘two’ much 🙂 and did not do any on the bottom panels.  I think it works.

I’m in love with the stencil.

Adds just the right amount of elegance and whimsy.

And competely recreates the bureau.

I had wanted to do a nice refinishing of the wood, but that was much more work!  Apparently.

Baby steps.

My friend said the wood on top was not a quality wood like the doors to be refinished and would be very difficult.  And I had paint on hand, and then a stencil appeared in my life, so this is what happened.

Happy thrifting and DIY’ing,

-Jaime

Speaking of lamps…and “A Friend Loves At All Times”

lamp- Goodwill, $4.99 several years ago

cross sign- Goodwill, .99 last Saturday

A bed is NOT a bed without a lamp beside it.  How are you supposed to read?  Or blog?  Or write?

Or stare for an inappropriately long time at your puppy while he sleeps? 😉

I can’t help it.

One needs a lamp.  Or else you get completely comfortable and have to do the dreaded walk to the door to shut off the lights.  No one wants to do that.  Or you fall asleep and wake up in the middle of the night and do it then.

Neither good options.  Enter, lamp.

Thankfully I just got back my favorite lamp from the house I left it in when I moved back to CT last September.  (And then returned here in March for those of you not up. to. date.)  Somehow I didn’t bring it with me when I left.

Well, I shouldn’t say somehow.  Somehow is that I had a broken ankle and both my friends and my boyfriend (bless their amazing hearts) had to ‘help’ me pack, (follow my stressed out orders) and I had to fly out before all my belongings were even safely in my car.  Hence the lamp going missing.  I would say that has something to do with how.

Sidenote: Moving with a broken ankle/tibia IS NOT FUN.  In the realm of fun and not fun.  It is definitely not fun.

Fortunately, the lamp was still in the same place that I left it, and in one of my many visits to my old place/their current place, I finally remembered to put it in my car.

And then on my nightstand.  Next to my bed.

It is coincidentally one of my favorite Goodwill purchases ever, and I bought it before I started this blog, but I think I have shared it once before.

I don’t think I can share it enough.

I also love the cross I purchased last Saturday for .99.  A steal.  And a good reminder.

A friend loves at all times.

Or should.  We all make mistakes.

And I will leave you with a picture of me once again enjoying my ‘sanctuary‘ on this first absolutely lovely day of fall like weather.  High of 77.  Nowhere near the 90+ temps of late.  And I am loving it.

Who’s Ready for Fall??? Go get your boots on!

My satisfied face.  Mmmhmmmm.  I found a good one.

Sweater- Forever XXI, $5.99

Boots- Blowfish, $5.99

Flats- daniblack, $2.99, half off color of the week

Wallet- $2.99, no brand name

Me. I am.  Always.  All year.  I love the colors.  The crisp cool air.  The scarves.  The boots.  The accessories!!!  The feel of things ending to make way for new beginnings.

All of the above.

But who is ready clothing wise?

I am just a little bit closer thanks to my trip yesterday to Goodwill.

The sweater is the perfect neutral palette for me to spice up with scarves and hats and such, which I have plenty of.  I also love the sleeve style where it is loose under the armpit area.  Who doesn’t like a little extra breathing room right there? (Does anyone know what the correct term for this style is?  I’d love to know)

The boots are great because they slip easily on and off, are comfortable, and not too high of a heel.  I also have one other or blowfish shoes, they are open toed flats, that I got for about $20 at DSW a couple years ago, and I get compliments on them almost every time I wear them.  So I felt good about another blowfish purchase.

The ‘wallet’, or credit card holder, has a see through pocket for my ID on the other side, as well as a zipper pocket for change/cash.  The perfect little size.  And I saw my friend use one just like it the other night, and thought that I would like to look for one, and there it was.  Good timing as always Goodwill.

I love my new Fall Essentials.  And can’t wait for it to be just cool enough to use them.  It’s still holding strong at 90+ here in TN at the moment.

My trip to San Francisco in less than two weeks may just be the perfect time.

And…an item I passed on 😦  The right shoe was just too loose, as they were technically a size too big.  Technicalities.  Foot size shmize.

Forever XXI Ballet flats, $4.99

Heartbreaking, huh?

And, in a not so Fall manner…I may have put a cheap box of light blonde Revlon on my hair last night…

IMG_4603

…NOT so fally…but I’m glad it turned out alright.  Not bright orange or green.  These are plusses.

I’d love to go dark for the fall/winter, as they recommend, but anytime I do, it turns a reddish brown, not just straight brown.  Someday I’ll figure it out.  For now, blonde will do.

And lastly, thanks Martyna over at spoolish.com for reminding me to look for Fall essentials, or else I may just have never found these wonderful items:)

happy Fall thrifting to all of you,

-Jaime

Are you as excited to wear scarves again as I am?

Not that I completely stopped over the summer months…

I liked the lamp on the left until…

I liked the lamp on the left until...

I saw it’s darker sister on the right. (They were not positioned like this when I walked in. Yours truly did that for the picture’s sake).

I was ready, almost, to walk out (after paying) with the lighter green lamp, and then noticed the exact same, except for a couple shades darker, other green lamp. The sister. And I thought, suddenly, this isn’t a lovely shade of olive green, it’s a faded dark green, and everything changed. I couldn’t put out of my mind that this lamp was not what it was supposed to be. And every time I looked at it I would probably not think, “what a lovely shade”, (no pun intended ;)I would think, “how faded.”

Oh well.

It is a great color though, isn’t it? 😉

On another note, I finally found something that I don’t think many Goodwills carry.

A hammer.

The original purpose of this trip was to get a hammer to FINALLY hang some wall art on the solid wood-non drywall thumb tac friendly walls at my ‘new’ place.

On my way in, I couldn’t picture ever having seen one in all my trips there, but thought I’d try anyway…

Nope, my initial instincts were co-rec-toe.

No hammer.

And still no hung wall art.

Sad walls.

Kinda sad Jaime. I need art in my life. And pretty plaques and pictures on my walls.

Twill have to venture elsewhere for a hammer.

Funny, actually, I just realized I had a hammer, that I have lost in my many moves, in a toolkit my stepdad gave me that he got at…Goodwill! (The addiction runs in the family). I guess I will keep the Goodwill-hammer faith.

Do wish I still had that toolbox though :/

tiled garden table, Half-off for $4.49

This is my front porch.

Lovely place, wouldn’t you say?

I agree.

However, I haven’t hung out here much since I moved here July 1.  I don’t know why.

But I was at Goodwill this past Saturday- I stopped in for half-off day (which takes place the first Saturday of every month in my area- make sure you check your local Goodwill specials as everywhere is different!!)  It’s usually pretty crazy, but they staff it well so that it doesn’t take too long once you get in line, and I found this awesome tiled garden table.

It was priced at $8.99, so I got it for half at $4.49.  Not bad at all.

I love the bright, fun tile pattern.

As soon as I got home, I put it on my porch, and immediately sat out there with a glass of wine and a homemade harvest salad (bleu cheese, apples, almonds and mushrooms and a raspberry vinaigrette dressing)  It was as good as it sounds, yes.

And I sat out there again yesterday.

I guess all my porch needed was a table.

And I am loving it.  Somehow theres just enought shade, that even in 90+ degree hotness, I still feel okay out there for a little bit.  Maybe the table is a little magical too.  Maybe.

That’s Goodwill for ya.  Showing ya things you never knew you always needed.  For less.

Live the life you’ve always dreamed.  Go ahead

Weekend Wisdom…on a Tuesday- How Much Are You Living?

Hi!  So I haven’t been doing SO awesome on the weekend wisdom posts, I’ll admit.

I’ve missed a couple weeks.

And today is Tuesday.

These are good points.  I am going to continue anyway….here goes.

Do you want to be happy?

No?  Well then you should probably not read the insight I am about to impart.

“Life is not about how much you’re MAKING (pretty much what 99.999% of the population worries about), it’s about how much you’re LIVING.”

(I came up with that all on my lonesome.  Unless someone is here to tell me I stole it.)

The two do not go hand in hand.

They don’t.

Don’t argue with me.  It’s true.

I don’t make a lot of money.

There, I said it.

(Although even if I did, I imagine and am fairly certain I would still be the millionaire shopping at a thrift store)

HOWEVER, I have PLENTY of fun.

Plenty of life and living happening in my general vicinity.

Ask my Mom.  She worries a good amount.

Look around you.  The world is a wonderful place full of opportunities for adventure, and YOU were born with unique passions and desires that WILL fulfill you.  Even if they are expensive desires, there are ways to fulfill them thriftly.  Where there’s a <Good>will there’s a way. (Didya see what I did there?? :))

As Robert Stevenson said, “The world is full of a number of things, we should all be as happy as Kings.”

And as a wonderful plaque that I purchased at Goodwill puts it,

“Life is a banquet and most poor suckers are starving to death.”

Maybe a little harsh :/, but you get the point.

Don’t starve, live life, to the fullest.

Anyway, so often we worry about what we make and how we can make MORE (I find myself doing this too much), that it seems like that is what life is about.  But you can have all the money in the world, and still not be living.

Go take a spontaneous road trip to that cool town an hour and a half away.  Just walk around with a local coffee if you can’t afford to eat at the restaurants or bars.  Soak in the culture.  Sit on the corner and beg, I don’t care.

Take a hike.  (but please come back and read my blog still at some point.  that was not meant to offend)

Go camping.

Watch waterfalls.

Paint a picture.

Go shopping.  At a thrift store.

Buy a groupon for something fun.  Scout Mob is a great phone app as well for major cities.

I could go on.  And I have, in my posts.

And if you read my blog ever, I’m sure you will get plenty of fun and cheap ideas.

Anyway, stop worrying about how much you’re making and go out and live life.  Do you really need a new awesome coffee maker that will say Good Morning to you??  Or shake your hand?  I didn’t think so.

God’s got the rest.

That’s my three cents.  (I think it’s worth a little more than two…?)

Happy thrifting, and living.

Everyone Needs a Peasant Top…right?

IMG_4455

IMG_4430

IMG_4423 IMG_4418 IMG_4410

$4.29, no tag, aka I don’t know the brand.

Just like this.

Or at least me. Maybe y’all would like yours to look a little different.

But I recommend not too different as this top is really working out for me.

I honestly can’t remember the first place I wore this amazing piece of clothing, but I do remember that the SECOND was the preschool that I work at.  And I know that while I was wearing it the first time, I do remember thinking,

“I’m gonna wear this to work.”

And I did.

I did.

Lo and behold, while working, I got into a conversation about clothing (shocking, I know) with a college student who was there doing research on our children (completely appropriate and approved by director and parents alike, don’t worry).  Long story short, she complimented my shirt.  That being the above peasant top for people who have trouble following.  And she had very good taste, you’ll just have to trust me on this.

Well I obviously would think she had good taste because she was wearing a very slightly different (just in the neckline) version of a dress that I own myself.  She purchased her dress at Nordstrom’s, I got mine at Goodwill, but it is a Target brand originally.  This makes me slightly confused, first, and then I come to the realization that they all must share patterns and fabrics apparently, from Target to Nordstrom’s and I wonder how this works.  If anyone out there happens to know.

Goodwill strikes again y’all, I hope you are continuing to have thrift luck as I do!

Happy thrifting and thanks for stopping by! Follow me if you’d like! Or you can follow me on instagram, @mygoodwillfinds or @jaimen84. Either/or. Both will show you amazing things and wonderment 😉

-Jaime

Do you like peasant shirts like me, or do you think they are outdated?  Please tell.

I did! Until I kept finding myself trying them on…and so I finally just gave in and bought the perfect one! As a matter of opinion of course…
