Fun in New Orleans

Fun in New Orleans

I had the pleasure last Thursday-Saturday of spending a couple days in New Orleans with some of my favorite gal pals.

Oh my! Those two last words rhyme. Wouldja look at that.

Anyway, I’ve mentioned liking Nashville’s location so much because there are several cool cities within driving distance, New Orleans being under 8 hours.

My friend knew someone who owned…i mean owns…we didn’t break in on who currently lives there now- a condo in the French Quarter, so we stayed there free of charge. It was nice.

We were walking around the Garden District, as it is called, on Friday, and as I walked by this red door I couldn’t pass up the photo op. it would have been a sin.

And surprise of surprises, my outfit that day (minus the sandals) was entirely Goodwill. I have posted about both items already, the green jacket with hurricane collar ($5.99), and the old navy ankle zipper light blue jean capris (.99. yes you read that right). Underneath the jacket, not visible to the naked, or just the absolutely normal, eye, is a blue flowery loose (flowery. loose. favorite words) racer back tank I got in CT last year for…cheap. Silly me was not thinking about this blog and to unzip the jacket before the picture so y’all could see it!

Still worth a post though.

The girl is my good friend Rion, who has been the photographer a time or two for pictures for this blog. So there she is. Photog extraordinaire.

New Orleans was beautiful and quaint and there were beads everywhere:). I would go again for sure. And not just to model my Goodwill clothes.

Happy thrifting and traveling!

Speaking of lamps…and “A Friend Loves At All Times”

lamp- Goodwill, $4.99 several years ago

cross sign- Goodwill, .99 last Saturday

A bed is NOT a bed without a lamp beside it.  How are you supposed to read?  Or blog?  Or write?

Or stare for an inappropriately long time at your puppy while he sleeps? 😉

I can’t help it.

One needs a lamp.  Or else you get completely comfortable and have to do the dreaded walk to the door to shut off the lights.  No one wants to do that.  Or you fall asleep and wake up in the middle of the night and do it then.

Neither good options.  Enter, lamp.

Thankfully I just got back my favorite lamp from the house I left it in when I moved back to CT last September.  (And then returned here in March for those of you not up. to. date.)  Somehow I didn’t bring it with me when I left.

Well, I shouldn’t say somehow.  Somehow is that I had a broken ankle and both my friends and my boyfriend (bless their amazing hearts) had to ‘help’ me pack, (follow my stressed out orders) and I had to fly out before all my belongings were even safely in my car.  Hence the lamp going missing.  I would say that has something to do with how.

Sidenote: Moving with a broken ankle/tibia IS NOT FUN.  In the realm of fun and not fun.  It is definitely not fun.

Fortunately, the lamp was still in the same place that I left it, and in one of my many visits to my old place/their current place, I finally remembered to put it in my car.

And then on my nightstand.  Next to my bed.

It is coincidentally one of my favorite Goodwill purchases ever, and I bought it before I started this blog, but I think I have shared it once before.

I don’t think I can share it enough.

I also love the cross I purchased last Saturday for .99.  A steal.  And a good reminder.

A friend loves at all times.

Or should.  We all make mistakes.

And I will leave you with a picture of me once again enjoying my ‘sanctuary‘ on this first absolutely lovely day of fall like weather.  High of 77.  Nowhere near the 90+ temps of late.  And I am loving it.

Jackpot…decisions need to be made

This past Saturday I finally had time to make a stop into my local Goodwill in East Nashville, and spent a good hour perusing and was happily happily rewarded.

IMG_2969

Look at that cart full of lovely patterns and color combinations galore.  Old Navy and Forever 21 and Target among them.

And I thought I had found a lot/done well at this point.

Little did I know.

Cut to a half hour later.

IMG_2971

And this is what my cart looked like.  Just a few more items 😉

Full of stripes and flowers and colors even more galore.

I think I set a personal record for most items of clothing tried on in one visit.  Possibly.  It’s hard to tell.  There are several other very close seconds I know.

IMG_2979

‘Yes’s’ to the left, ‘No’s’ to the right.

I said this in the dressing room to myself and the Bob Dylan song “clowns to the left of me, joker’s to the right…” popped into my head.    Now you can all sing “Stuck in the middle with you” for the rest of the day.  You’re welcome.

Luckily, most of the dressing room ‘no’s’ were easy decisions to make due to fit, etc.  I only had to turn a few down because of grownup things like cost and and just maybe not really completely needing another shirt.. dress.. shoe..what have you…. 😦

Now for some closeups…

This is one of the yes’s… turned a no…

the decision had to be made.

IMG_2973

One too many ruffles was the deciding factor.

Although I was very excited to find a lovely blue form fitting dress for $7.99 because I am trying to stear away from always wearing loose hippy type clothing, and MAYBE show off the figure I work so hard to keep for once…

But the ruffles were a bit excessive.  And I had to leave it behind.  To the right of the dressing room it went.

IMG_2981

Yes, yes, yes all over this outfit.

top by a.n.n.a. for $4.49.  Flowy.  Wow, what a surprise.  Who cares.  Love.

NY&Co. dark leggins jeans, with a zipper and button so they’re not completely jeggings I don’t think, my size, my style, $7.99.  To my house they go.

A girl needs to keep her skinny jeans in stock if she insists on keeping her tops as big and flowy as possible.  It’s all about balance.

IMG_2982

Keeping it casual in a loose fitting striped tee.

I can’t remember the brand, but it was also 4.49.  I wore it to the dog park that day.

I like it better with white shorts, but I’d have to be crazy to wear white shorts to a dog park.  Crazy.

IMG_2984

Flowery short sleeve peasant blouse by Converse for Target, $4.49.  With a tie in the back to cinch the waist.

I wore it to an outdoor movie night in East Nashville the following night.

The movie pick was Raising Arizona with Nicolas Cage and John Goodman amongh others.  I wasn’t excited about it but wanted to go anyway.

I. Loved. It.

So quirky and weird and awesome (exactly how I described it to my bf when he asked how it was).  Don’t know how I went so long without it in my life.

IMG_2987

Me and my girlfriend’s dog, Lady.  Sorry about the blur.  It happens.

IMG_2988

My friend Christina and I completely engrossed in the picture.  (No, my eyes are not closed- it was the flash 🙂

Such a fun night.  Perfect weather.  Food trucks, local beer (Jackalope), movie outside while lying on blankets with friends and dogs.  Bliss!

IMG_2983

Can’t forget the homegoods section.

Glass beaded candle, $1.99.

I’m moving in with my friend this weekend, and I think this will match her (our) decor very well.

IMG_2985

All my finds together.  $34 total.  Not horrible at all.

Not included in a close-up:

Striped gray tee v-neck by Vintage, $4.49.

Pink Pashmina scarf, $1.99.

And square baking pan, $1.99.  Gotta keep those baked goods on hand to help me fill out those skinny jeans!:)  Don’t think that just comes natural! Haha.

I made butterscotch brownies in them that very day…and then remade them the next day as I failed the first time.

If at first you don’t succeed, try, and try again!

And I did.

And I will.

That’s what life is about!

Thanks for stopping by, please come again, and leave a comment or two or three!

Perfect Spring Day and Red Stripe Maxi Dress

IMG_2303

IMG_2305

IMG_2297 IMG_2325 IMG_2311 IMG_2310 IMG_2300

I have been waiting for the right occasion to wear this lovely red striped maxi dress ever since this post when I brought home all this loot:

044

Do you see it peeking out?

And the occasion(s) finally came!

Sunday funday as it has been called.

I first patio brunched with a friend at a The Black Pearl, a new restaurant sitting on Old Hickory Lake on the outskirts of Nashville, TN, and had all you can eat seafood- crab legs, shrimp, crawfish and corn, and a Mai Tai, my first one:)  It was a beautiful sunny day, and then I attended an outdoor festival that my friend Irene (on the right in the second picture down) was hosting/mc’ing.  Like me, she is pursuing her dream of being a stand up comic.  And she funny.  I surround myself with dreamers like me.  (Mine is being a published, or at least respected, songwriter.)

Don’t you agree??  I think I waited for the right time.

The dress held up to the challenge of the day, and I even got one compliment, out loud at least…I’m positive there were others unspoken:)  Is that what confidence?…or something else?:)

The festival was next to/on the Cumberland River in downtown Nashville, and that picture is of the pedestrian bridge that you can stroll across whenever you’d like and admire the downtown view.  Very pretty, and for sure one of my favorite places in Nashville.

As you can see in the last picture, the dress is the perfect length- hard to do in a Maxi dress.  I have another that is probably a few inches too short, but I still rock it anyway.

Lastly, I didn’t take a picture of the back, but you can probably tell, it is racerback, so this is one of those fun dresses you have to wear a strapless for…oh joy.  Let’s just say I would’ve done a little more dancing had it not been for the sans straps bra, but that was the only casualty of the day due to the dress.  Totally worth it.  No one needs to see my dancing anyway.  🙂

Hope you enjoyed and are inspired to go make some finds of your own!!

I know for me at least I’m inspired enough for plenty of people!

Live beautifully,

-Jaime

Happy Feet and Happy Birthday to Me!

For the first half of my Saturday, I sported these Goodwill finds…

014 013 010

You may remember me getting these sweet little things a week or two back, but I got to finally wear them for the first time yesterday.  The frigid temperatures in CT climbed up into the 40’s on Saturday for a pleasant yet short reprieve.  So I was able to slip my feet into these bright spots.

When I wear a bright piece such as those shoes, I like to try and keep the rest of my outfit prety neutral, yet still fun.  So I paired it with dark blue jeans and an off white lacy loose sweater.  It really let the shoes shine.  And it worked.  When I met with my future roommate that morning to look at an apt, I got a quick “I like your shoes!”  Mission accomplished.

I didn’t tell her just yet that they are Goodwill…she’ll find out about my obsession…soon enough.  I don’t think she shares it, but she is still a pretty cool girl.  Actually more than a cool girl, we get along pretty well.

For the second half of the day I have this Goodwill gem for you…

021 023 040

Awesome wine markers for $1.00.  Each strip wraps snuggly around the stem of the glass and has descriptive terms on each that can be used both for wine…and people.  Always makes for some fun while drinking and gathering.

How would you describe your friends in wine terms??:)  And for just $1.00

What was the reason to celebrate you ask?  My birthday!  29th:)  It was actually on Thursday, but I celebrated it last night by having a little gathering at my house where I made the best flat breads (no pictures, sorry! :-/) ever.  One was gorgonzola cheese with spinach and  cremini mushrooms, and the other was good ol fashioned fresh mozzarella and pepperoni!  Then we went to a local comedy club, Brew Haha, that is attached to a brewery- two of my favorite things!  Laughs and microbrewed beer!  It was a great night.  The comics were absolutely hilarious and yet still respectful in their jokes, for the most part.  The main guy was Rodney Laney, you should definitely check him out if you want a laugh.

026

No flashes allowed!  Hence, picture by candlelight.  My friend may have told them I was turning 30 instead of 29 to get them to do something for me or she just wanted me to be embarrassed on stage…and I don’t know if that’s why I got this cake or not, but it was amazing.  I would say the best ice cream cake ever, if my Mom hadn’t just made an equally amazing one the night before with strawberry cake crust and oreo ice cream and hot fudge on top.

After the comedy club we stopped by one of my new favorite restaurants in downtown Hartford, Max Downtown, to have some of the best calamari ever and a rosemary lemontini.  I’d been dreaming about that lemontini since my friend had one a few weeks earlier.  She made the better choice getting that drink that night, and I couldn’t wait to make it as well!

  033028031

These are most of the participants that night, fresh from laughing our faces off.

Oh look at that, those earrings I am wearing are from Goodwill!  Phew, I was afraid that nothing in my outfit was from Goodwill.  Its rare, but that does happen.  They were $2.00.  From Target.  Silver hoops with light orange small balls hanging from the bottom.

The lady on the right is my thrifting friend Rachel.  Her beautiful blazer is from the Goodwill as well.  I can’t remember how much she said it was though.

Thanks for stopping by!  Happy thrifting!

-Jaime

Do you get scared by birthdays or accept them happily, thankful you made it another year?

Do you enjoy a good comedy club as much as I do?
